Ley civil e inmortalidad artificial en Thomas Hobbes

Resumen

En esta presentación se examinan los principales mecanismos de inmortalidad o de eternidad de vida artificial que Thomas Hobbes establece en el Leviatán (1651-1668), con el fin de alcanzar unas condiciones de soberanía duraderas. Asimismo, la propuesta política hobbesiana se contrasta con su posición epistémica, para así identificar su limitación insalvable, en cuanto a la posibilidad de conocer la naturaleza humana que se pretende restringir con el mismo nivel de certeza que los mecanismos políticos diseñados para tal fin. La tesis de fondo que se defiende es que el problema político en Hobbes no es producto de un supuesto pesimismo antropológico, sino del escepticismo gnoseológico que se deriva de su posición epistémica.

Abstract

The aim of this presentation is to examine the main mechanisms of artificial immortality that Thomas Hobbes defines in the Leviathan for achieving lasting conditions of sovereignty. On the other hand, Hobbes’ political account is contrasted with his epistemic position, in order to identify its insurmountable limitation, in terms of the possibility of knowing the human nature that it is intended to restrict with the same level of certainty as the political mechanisms designed for that purpose. The basic thesis defended is that the Hobbesian political problem is not the product of an alleged anthropological pessimism, but of the gnoseological skepticism that derives from his epistemic position.
